Time for a social media audit ✨ Community Dev Newsletter #45

Community Dev Newsletter

Hi!

Happy 2026!!! It'll definitely be a busy year for me, so apologies in advance if these newsletters are shorter as the months go on. But I'm excited to get these rolling for the new year. I missed talking community!

Let me know if there's anything in particular you want to see from these newsletters moving forward. :) It's been interesting as I've moved to more of a managerial role for my community team, and I'm tempted to talk more about that... 🧐

This month's newsletter dives into:

  • Guidance on doing a mini social media audit
  • A new newsletter activity
  • Several cool links and marketing/community related job posts

A Mini Social Audit

It's a new year and we continue to be in an ever changing landscape of social media practices. SIGH.

While you should already be tracking your social media performance throughout the year, it can be nice to pretend you're looking at your pages for the first time with fresh eyes. So here are a few guideposts to get you started, though this certainlyyyyyyy could get even more in-depth if you desire it!

Platforms

Take a minute to list and consider all your social accounts (even ones that you might've stopped posting on.)

  • Bluesky and/or Twitter/X
  • Facebook
  • Discord
  • Newsletter
  • Instagram
  • Instagram Reels
  • Reddit
  • Threads
  • TikTok
  • YouTube Shorts

Depending on which ones are currently active, consider:

  1. Who you are talking to on these channels. (They might have different demographics!)
  2. What kind of content you post on there, in addition what kinds of comments/sentiment you get on each platform.
  3. When you post - how frequent is the activity? Is it sustainable?
  4. Why you post there. What's the purpose of the social media channel? Is it to handle customer support requests, drive wishlists, or engage? Is it working?
  5. Where you post certain content. Are there anymore opportunities or challenges to continuing posting there in 2026? Should you start posting there again?

Metrics

It's important to continue keeping an eye out on how well your follower and engagement rate is panning out. (And conversion, if possible.) As algorithms change and more and more effort is required to maintain these accounts, you may find it's better to drop one overtime or even pick up a new one!

Social Calendar

Take the time now to plan out key dates for the year, even if they shift. This can be anything from certain holidays you want to highlight and request assets for, game conference, or things that are in motion like a game release date. This will help ensure you're getting requests in early enough and thinking ahead.

Content

Everyone is coming up with new ways they've found engagement on a platform. Keep an eye on that, but also experiment with how you can stand out from the crowd on your own. By the time everyone starts learning about one trick, the platforms move onto another and it's best to consider what story and mood you're trying to convey to your audience no matter what!

Community Activity πŸ“

Every month we do a skill testing exercise together! Have an activity idea or want to ask a question? Submit one anonymously.

The question:

What's one thing you're hoping to learn about community management in 2026?

Feel free to email me back with your answer! Normally I would promise my answer in the next newsletter but I need to par it back a bit haha. But maybe I will!
