A guide to creating constant content ✨ Community Dev Newsletter #9

Content for the Algorithm Gods

This newsletter is always going to be free, but we're now over the amount for free subscribers (whoa)! If you'd like to help fund this, my Kofi is open. 💸 But no pressure! I can afford it myself. :)

Hiiiiiiiiiiiiii!

This month's new post is one of the biggest struggles most of us deal with - the constant need for consistent social media content. Love to be a cog in a machine! (Too pessimistic?)

It's a hefty post, and in it I cover things like:

  • A framework for thinking about content creation and how to generate numerous topics from one idea
  • Defining what quality, constant content even means
  • Tips on making it sustainable

If all that sounds interesting to you, then head on over to my blog post now! If it does not then.. okay! Nice!

Community Activity

Here's the community question of the month.

The question:

Pick a game's social media account. Describe the brand's voice using two core descriptors and explain why you chose those words based on what you saw online. E.g. "Rebellious" and "Funny".

If you need some help, check out The 12 Brand Archetypes, which is a pretty traditional brand marketing chart. You don't have to answer this question using the archetypes!

Being able to identify what another studio is doing and being able to analyze their tone is key to understanding social media. Feel free to email me back with your answer - I always respond to them! My answer will be in the next newsletter, as always.

Your responses to the last community question for so refreshing to read - thank you for those who were willing to share with me!

Question refresher:

What are some ways you identify potential influencers to send keys to?

My response: There's a lot of options for this! Here are some ways I get to finding influencer folks:

  • Media lists: If you are part of events, often times they'll send you a media list with the contact info of content creators. But don't just blindly mass email people - go through the list, see what they cover, and create your own future media list from it.
  • Places like SullyGnome: There are a ton of places where you can see what games streamers are playing, and finding ones that play games in a similar genre or theme to yours can be super helpful!
  • Checking out stream teams: Finding streamer groups (such as Noir Network or Rainbow Arcade) can often help you find a ton of streamers to contact or even sponsor, if you have that kind of cash.
  • Scope out competitor games: Tracking who plays your competition's games is a great way to see who to contact in the future! You can often see who plays what games by finding the game on YouTube, Twitch, or a place like SullyGnome.
  • Do a call out on your social media: Advertise that you send out preview keys! Keep in mind this will be extra work on you to field requests, but it can be worth a shot.
  • Work with a PR team: Have some extra cash but not enough time? Offload the work to folks who can do it for you - popagenda and Future Friends are some of the PR teams that can handle code requests.

As a note, don't just aim for influencers with the largest followings. Streamers with smaller, more tight-knit communities can be great places to send keys and pitches to! I also have a few reservations about just placing your game on key distribution services, as those aren't great in creating actual connections with streamers.

Another month, another round up of cool things I've seen. This area keeps getting bigger and bigger haha.

Next month is DECEMBER, which means the year is almost over?! Wowie. I might take a mini-break and only do a small newsletter next month, but I've got lots planned for next year. :)
